ASTHMA TREATMENT  ASTHMA: TREATMENT

Asthma attacks can occur anywhere, at any time.

If someone has an asthma attack you should follow this 4 STEP Asthma First Aid Plan.

If their condition suddenly deteriorates or if at any time you are concerned – call an ambulance immediately 0-0-0.

Use the person’s own reliever puffer if possible. If not, use the First Aid Kit blue reliever puffer or borrow one from someone. Reliever puffers include Airomir, Asmol, Epaq and Ventolin. (A Bricanyl Turbuhaler may be used in Asthma First Aid treatment if a puffer and spacer are unavailable).

If a spacer is not available then follow the above 4 steps using just the blue reliever puffer.

Record all the details of the first aid.

Reliever and Preventer Medication

Reliever medication. Ventolin is often prescribed by a doctor for the relief of symptoms of an asthma attack. It is used by the casualty when breathing becomes difficult.

Preventer medication. These medications are prescribed by a doctor to reduce the sensitivity of the body to the triggers that cause asthma. This medication is often taken as two puffs morning and night every day. Reliever medication is not used during an asthma attack.
