MAKING ASSESSMENTS MAKING ASSESSMENTS
Before
the first aider provides help, an assessment of the area must be made for
dangers. The first aider does not want to get injured.
DANGERS
Check
to see whether if it is safe to approach the injured and that the following
do not present any danger.
Always perform a primary survey first and take care of the basic life support. If assistance in this area is not required you can commence a secondary survey.
HISTORY As you conduct your surveys, record your details on an injury/accident registry. This is an account of the illness or accident as obtained from the patient or a witness observing the situation. This should be recorded and handed over to the emergency services personal, work cover or legal representative.
SYMPTOMS The patient will tell you their symptoms - these are the sensations that the patient describes e.g. PAIN, DIZZENESS, HEADACHE, ETC.
SIGNS This is the evidence collected by the first aider e.g. BLEEDING, PALE SKIN, SWELLING, DEFORMITY, ETC
VITAL SIGNS A patient's vital signs are a clear airway, breathing and circulation. Check to see whether the head is tilted back and that the throat is not blocked with contamination. Your can also check for SIGNS OF LIFE.
